TF Sightings | PotP: Rodimus Unicronus

06.17.2018 – Sometimes an unfamiliar character or a different take on the former with a new look might grab your attention.

For some, it might be a redundant concept applied to a character that never was a ‘bad guy’ or a villain. But it sure is a surprising twist of a spoiler if you have been catching up to “Power of the Primes.”

Power of the Primes just may have been quite fresh on Go90 and some platforms that you can view outside of North America. But the revelation that there’s going to take on the Rodimus character seems to start appearing in local toy stores in Australia.

Of course, this Rodimus is not a Prime but a Unicronus that happens to be a ‘Herald of Unicron?’ This Leader Class assortment was quite a surprise being sighted at Big W in Westfield Marion and it is the only stock sitting beside the other assortment in this particular branch that is usually not the go-to place for your Transformers needs.

Usually, Big W’s neighboring store up one level also in Westfield Marion is Target which has most of the Transformers assortment. But this time around they don’t have the newer waves. The one store that is also nearby is Myer that have the hard-to-find and sometimes exclusive released toys that were only sold in Japan.

But this one was being a buzz from leaks and online discussion forums. For a native of South Australia, this one was pretty much a twist like the story that plays out in the Prime Wars Trilogy.

Dark Unicronus

This is not the first time Rodimus was depicted as a dark character. The past releases of Rodimus as a villain go back to the Fun Publication Transformers Collectors Club stories featuring the Mirror Universe for Transformers in Shattered Glass. The look and aesthetics are no mistake for this Leader Class version of Rodimus.

It’s not even a straight repaint for this figure but receives a new head with a mustache similar to the Shattered Glass version. Of course, this is more prominent and it also appears that this character is not from that particular universe. But as speculation around the fandom says that this is Rodimus Prime corrupted by the Matrix of Chaos that is included in this figure.

Evolution of Evil

Taking a close look at the packaging down to the changes on the chest art as well as the colour of this figure looks good. But for longtime Hot Rod fans, this is going to be a deep-cut part of the character's ever-evolving history. Not only in toy form, will this become part of the character’s fictional history too.

There is already a slew of iterations and variations of Nemesis Prime what is stopping Hasbro/Takara from creating a Nemesis version of Rodmius? It’s interesting to find out that this rebellious cavalier would become something unexpected and it looks so good you’d expect this is just a beginning.

Not the Last Nemesis

You can find this as interesting as an anecdote, but in the future, it will be part of the character’s toy history. There will be more Nemesis versions of Hot Rod to come and it may not be a Unicronus and it might be from the Shattered Glass Universe, who knows what those variations will be, but the collectors and fans will be there for it.

If you’re on the hunt for Rodimus Unicronus, this Leader Class retails for $ 88.00 AUD (₱ 3,213.26 Pesos | $ 58.51 USD)** that has slowly started appearing in retail across Australia and other markets just keep an eye on this mustachioed fella.
