Simon Furman & Andrew Wildman talks about anything Transformers!

03.06.2012 – IDW is getting ready for a new era in Transformers comics and what a great way to bring back the original Generation One series to continue where the Marvel Comics series left off as of issue #80 sometime back in 1991.

For any serious G1 fan that has followed Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman this is something of an anticipation to get back and continue those stories left untold in the US series.

After almost 21 years of hiatus, IDW proudly returns to the original Transformers comic book universe, picking up right where 1991's Transformers #80 left off!

Reflecting back on the dizzying highs and the terrifying lows of the original run of Transformers comics, Optimus Prime watches over a Cybertron that hasn't faced Megatron for decades. But that peace shudders to an end, as we dive headlong into July's Transformers #81!

Because the Fans demanded it! Thousand of Transformers fans signed petitions urging us to make this book - and IDW listened!

Free Comic Book Day spoke to the two budding artists in the industry about the upcoming series and anything Transformers. Read about it below what has been transcribed during the interview…

FCBD: Set your project up for those that might be new to your comic book. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

SIMON FURMAN: A fresh/new start for the original Transformers series, picking up/restarting the story 21 years after issue #80. A new post-civil war, status quo has been established on a re-invigorated Cybertron (home planet of the Transformers), but not everyone is happy with it. And old enemies are back — and making their presence felt once more.

ANDREW WILDMAN: This book will touch the hearts of old fans and open the eyes of new ones.

FCBD: What has been your favorite part of book or character to tackle?

SF: Being able to address all the plot, story and character beats left dangling from before, and give the series a proper — and epic — conclusion.

AW: It is a privilege to be able to pick up where we left off 20 years ago with the original Transformers storyline.

FCBD: Tell our readers why they should pick your book first on FCBD

SF: 16-pages of all-new story and art, which serve both to recap the key story beats so far and launch the new story arc – in a big/shocking way. 20 years in the making and we take no prisoners.

FCBD: What’s your favorite part about being able to work in comics?

SF: Telling amazing stories like this, and putting a fresh, contemporary spin on something that’s been around for 25+ years.

AW: The special effects budget is unlimited. An advantage when trying to draw a Furman script.

FCBD: Many newcomers will be picking up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

SF: I started out reading British b/w adventure comics like Lion and Smash, but soon graduated to Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. I never really looked back after that.

AW: Other than nursery comics, my first “grown up” comic book was Avengers #44. It was a pivotal point and is the reason why I do what I do.

FCBD: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

SF: I’ll be signing copies of Regeneration One #80.5 in Orbital, a London comic books store.

AW: I will be at Orbital Comics in London doing a signing with Furman and (inker) Simon Baskerville.

FCBD: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's coming?

SF: Some truly earth-shattering stuff. Quite literally!

AW: The unexpected. You have no idea. I am blown away by what Furman is writing for this book. Transformers fans will be left mouths wide open.
