RID 2015: Combiner Force | Bludgeon

02.28.2018 – Transformers Robots in Disguise has reached its end in the cartoon media storyline as being part of the aligned continuity that dates back to Transformers Prime. It featured a lot of tie-in assortments and other merchandise that some of the characters even did not appear in the series.

One particular character that kids won’t recognize is Bludgeon. The skull-faced Samurai wielding Decepticon is more popular with collectors, where its original character was known in Simon Furman’s run with Marvel UK and US comicbooks. Of course, Bludgeon gets a figure for RID 2015 Warrior Class scale for this series!

When you see the carded artwork the first impression on the Robots in Disguise version of Bludgeon, the first impression is that this Decepticon is taking inspiration from Masters of the Universe’s Skeletor.

The artwork is on point it here and makes an interesting look on Bludgeon if the character appears in the Transformers Prime or Robots in Disguise, but there’s no description of the character in the carded packaging. You get to see introductions on the figure’s transformation into a Cybertronic tank at the back of the card.

This looks to be a fun figure to get although not G1-nesqued Bludgeon’s figure is quite an interesting one if you’re not picky with what Transformers you want. Unless you’re a Bludgeon fan this is a definitely an interesting one to acquire.

Combiner Force Bludgeon

Although Bludgeon does not have a “Combiner Force” gimmick, the figure was actually released towards the tail end of the toyline as part of Wave 4 along with wave mate Thermidor as part of the theme.

You’ll be surprised that Bludgeon is a redeco/repaint of two previous figures namely from Blaswave, which was an extensive retool of Megatronus (Clash of the Transformers) released in the same subline imprint.

Robot Mode

Bludgeon was part of the 2017 release with pretty much all of the figure from the waist up being redesigned, plus new kneepads which still feature 5mm pegholes. He transforms from a samurai-esque robot into a double-barreled Cybertronian tank. The cannon barrels in tank mode are articulated, and can be removed from the figure's back to be used as a hand-held weapon.

The figure also has a peg hole on the back of its head meant to "store" the sword in tank mode; but it can also be used in conjunction with the cannons to allow for the robot mode to be displayed in a more offense-focused configuration.

What makes this an interesting figure is that Bludgeon can hold the sword with his two hands that needs to extend his shoulders going forwards. The head sculpt of Blastwave remained unchanged when it was repainted into Bludgeon. But this figure works with this color than the later that had kept an original head instead.

Transformation

Instructions as mentioned can be found at the back of the card packaging with all the easy steps to follow, since this is a series with a young target demographic there’s no challenge in converting Bludgeon into the Cybertronian Tank that incorporates his double-barrelled cannon and katana blade as part of the vehicle mode.

Vehicle Mode

The tank mode is a straight up Cybertronian vehicle with minor retooling from the original Megatronus figure that now appears to be Bludgeon featuring all the signature colors of the character based on the original toys that was released in 1988.

The katana blade appears to be out of place in this alternate mode but at the same time just the right part to attach the peg to the back of Bludgeon’s head. There’s not much detail on the tank mode, but this character will always be connected to being in this vehicle form as the original’s inner robot when it transforms into a made up tank.

Overall Verdict

Bludgeon in this aesthetics works well than utilizing the Blastwave colors. Besides that he can hold his sword with two hands it’s unfortunate that Hasbro produced this character in the Warrior Class scale it could be impressive on a Voyager Class assortment. The cartoonish translation makes Bludgeon appears like Skeletor’s long lost cousin that became an undead killing machine.

Accessories seems to be short-handed when the original toy had an actual rocket launcher when this new toy came with almost similar accessory that reduces the authenticity into making it a two-piece weapon not including his signature rifle.

Overall it is a nice figure if you’re a fan of the Bludgeon character despite not being from G1 or Generations or you’re not even keen to appreciate the tank mode. The figure did justice on the character’s aesthetics definitely!
